Sheikh Falafel: Authentic Tunisian Street Food for less than €4

Much of the world is still suffering from high inflation following the Covid-19 pandemic and the disruption caused by the war in Ukraine, and Poland is no exception. Many of Krakow’s residents and expats have seen food and restaurant prices increase dramatically over the last two years, although prices are still relatively affordable compared to Western European cities. Yet it is increasingly difficult to find eateries that offer quality cuisine that is close to pre-inflation prices. However, one street food establishment has managed to buck this trend — Sheikh Falafel.

Sheikh Falafel is a hidden gem located in the underpass that connects Krakow’s main train station and Galeria Krakowska shopping centre to ul. Basztowa. It specializes in authentic Tunisian street food, particularly falafel.

Falafel is a popular Middle Eastern and North African dish consisting of deep-fried balls or patties made from ground chickpeas, fava beans, or a combination of both. These legumes are mixed with herbs, spices, onions, and garlic, forming a flavourful and aromatic mixture. Traditionally served in pita bread or flatbreads, falafel is often accompanied by fresh vegetables, tahini sauce, or hummus.

Sheikh Falafel offers a mouth-watering variety of authentic and hearty falafel wraps, served in traditional Tunisian bread, for around 14-16 zloty (€3.25-3.75) each. Accompanying ingredients include grilled halloumi cheese, aubergine, harissa (a spicy and aromatic chilli paste), feta cheese, and avocado. Other popular items include authentic baklava (a rich, sweet pastry that is a traditional dessert in many Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and Balkan cuisines) and homemade lemonade with honey to cool down during the hot summer days in Poland’s most-visited city.

So, next time you’re out and about in Krakow’s Old Town, and want to save more of your travel budget for the evening, make sure to drop by Sheikh Falafel and try out one of their delicious wraps (or two if you have the appetite!).
