If you have a an extra day to spare during your visit, or if you want to do something different, consider going on a day trip. In this article, we will introduce you to five fascinating destinations just a short distance  from Krakow. Each offers its own unique experiences. Scroll down to read about each destination.

Wieliczka Salt Mine: Subterranean Wonder

Distance from Krakow: 15km

Descend into the fascinating world of the Wieliczka Salt Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Admire beautiful salt-carved sculptures, underground chambers and stunning salt lakes. During your visit, you will learn about the history of salt mining and its significance to the region. It is a fascinating journey through centuries of craftsmanship and natural formations.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is easily accessible from Krakow. You can take a local train from Krakow Glowny station to Wieliczka Rynek station, which is a short walk from the mine entrance.  The journey takes 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a direct bus from Krakow to Wieliczka.

From our property, the mine is only a short distance (5km) away by car or bus.

Ojców National Park: Nature’s Delight

Distance from Krakow: 30km

Escape into the tranquility of Ojców National Park, a place of natural beauty located just outside Krakow. Discover enchanting landscapes, rugged cliffs and twisting rivers. During your visit to the area, you can take leisurely walks through dense forests, see ancient castles and discover mystical caves. It is a perfect retreat for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Ojców National Park is easily accessible by public transportation from Krakow. You can take a bus from Krakow’s main bus station or catch a train from Krakow Glowny station to Przeginia or Jerzmanowice stations, which are close to the park entrance. From there, you can explore the park on foot or rent a bicycle. Alternatively you can go by car — the journey takes around 30 minutes.

Auschwitz-Birkenau: A Journey into History

Distance from Krakow: 70km

Reflect on the tragic history of the Holocaust with a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the infamous Nazi concentration and extermination camps. During your Auschwitz tour, you will learn more about the camp as well as its victims and survivors of this dark chapter of human history. It’s a difficult and somewhat depressing experience, yet it’s one of the most important places of interest for visitors to Poland.

To visit Auschwitz-Birkenau, you can join an organised tour that includes transportation from Krakow. Many tour operators offer convenient transportation options with guided tours, ensuring a smooth and informative visit to the memorial site. Alternatively, you can go there on your own and get tickets as an independent visitor. Oswiecim, the town where the former Nazi concentration camp is located, can be reached by car, train or bus. It’s 1h 15 mins by car from Krakow.

Zakopane: Mountain Retreat and Natural Beauty

Distance from Krakow: 110km

Visit the picturesque town of Zakopane situated in the Tatra Mountains. Experience the stunning mountain scenery, go hiking in the national park, or take a cable car to the top of Gubałówka Hill for panoramic views. The best way to reach Zakopane is car or by bus. Buses depart regularly from the main bus station at the back of the Krakow Glowny railway station. The journey takes approximately 2 hours.

Dunajec River Gorge and Pieniny National Park: Scenic River Adventure

Distance from Krakow: 115km

Go on an unforgettable adventure through the Dunajec River Gorge, located in the picturesque Pieniny National Park. From Szczawnica, you can join a guided rafting tour along the Dunajec River, or rent a raft and navigate the river yourself. It is advisable to book a tour in advance or check the local transportation options for the most convenient way to reach the gorge.
