On 22-12-22, Pizza Garden, a restaurant in Krakow renowned for its high quality ingredients, permanently closed due to management’s refusal to compromise on price and quality in the face of rising inflation. In spite of this sad event for Krakow’s pizza lovers, the city continues to offer a wide variety of pizzerias, many of them featuring authentic Italian flavours and styles. In this article, we will explore five of the city’s best pizzerias.
Olio
Nadwiślańska 7
Situated in Krakow’s trendy Podgórze district, Olio specialises in Neapolitan style wood-fired pizzas. It is regarded by many as the best pizzeria in Krakow and, according to their website, it is among the top 50 best pizzerias in the world. The restaurant is certified by the Assozione Verace Pizza Napoletana (AVPN), a legal Italian entity that defines what true Neapolitan Pizza is. In order to be certified, the pizzeria must observe strict traditional Neapolitan pizza making rules. These involve baking the pizza at a temperature of about 450°F (232°C) for a maximum of 90 seconds as well as using a dough that is a combination of finely milled 00 (“double zero”) flour, filtered water, yeast and sea salt.
Dolabella due
Rynek Główny 10
Dolabella Due is a hidden gem among Krakow’s pizzerias. Located in a secret alley just off the main Market Square, this unassuming but charming eatery offers authentic Neapolitan style Italian pizza. The heart and soul of the pizzeria lie in its wood-fired oven, where skilled artisans craft a variety of red and white based pizzas, made from authentic ingredients. With a 5 star score on Trip Advisor out of over 370 reviews, the restaurant comes highly rated.
Doppio ’00’
Kalwaryjska 32
Doppio zero, or double zero, the term for the Italian flour ideal for pizza, is the name of a new pizzeria in Krakow’s Podgórze district. In this small rustic-looking eatery, a young pizzaiolo creates authentic Neapolitan pizza, with an irregular shape, a substantial crust and protruding bubbles, a sign that he did everything with his hands, saving the rolling pin for pasta dough. A variety of authentic flavours are offered, including scamorza (a smoked Italian cheese) and nduja (a spicy sausage from Italy’s Calabria region).
Konopnickiej 11 Brick Oven Pizza
Marii Konopnickiej 11
Situated at the same address as the original location of the former Pizza Garden, this restaurant continues Pizza Garden’s legacy, apparently under the same family ownership. The pizza is baked in a brick oven and uses the same high quality ingredients as before. The restaurant offers one size of pizza this time (35cm) and prices are reasonable compared to other pizzerias. Patrons can dine indoors or enjoy their pizza in a cosy garden terrace, well shielded from the summer sun.
La Stazione
Galeria Krakowska
Located on the second floor of the Galeria Krakowska shopping centre, La Stazione is an Italian restaurant that offers surprisingly good pizza. Using ingredients imported from various regions of Italy, their chefs bake traditional pizza on a thin, crispy dough, in front of customers. The menu offers a variety of traditional flavours including mozzarella, anchovies, capers and olives, a combination which is unusually hard to find on other menus (other pizzerias on this list offer the same combination but without the mozzarella).
